In and around Hobart

There are a number of fascinating sights within Hobart. This page lists just a few.

Salamanca Place

Salamanca Place is lined with 19th century sandstone buildings, once the warehouses of the Port of Hobart. Salamanca is only a short trip from the University, and is a focal point of Tasmanian fine art and cuisine, housing galleries, cafes and restaurants.

On Saturdays, Salamanca is the site of a bustling market - organise your travel to arrive on the Friday, and take the chance to visit this icon of Tasmanian culture.

Battery Point

Battery Point, named after the gun battery that once protected the harbour, is a short stroll up Kelly's steps from Salamanca. One of the older suburbs of Hobart, Battery Point is a showcase of historic homes and cottages.

Take a casual stroll along the narrow streets, buy some antiques, or visit Arthurs Circus - a ring of cottages built around the old village green.

Mount Wellington

Although the views of Mt Wellington are spectacular, the views from Mt Wellington are even more so.

Be sure to take a tour to the top at least once during your stay. For the keen walkers, there are many short day and half-day walks on the mountain, we recommend the wishing well tour. The more adventurous might consider a descent by bicycle.

Museums

The Tasmanian museum and Art Gallery is near by the famous Constitution Dock, the rallying point at the finish of the annual Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. The museum was established by The Royal Society of Tasmania - the oldest Royal Society outside England.

Just around the corner is the Maritime museum of Tasmania.

The Tasmanian Distillery Museum boasts what is possibly the oldest still in Australia. It is in close proximity to the other museums.

Botanical Gardens

The Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens was established in 1818 and is Australia's second oldest botanic garden.

The Gardens are located on the Queens Domain, 20mins walk from the conference hotel, on a 13.5 hectare property overlooking the Derwent River.

Hobart Rivulet

The Hobart rivulet provides the water for the Cascade Brewery - Australia's oldest operational brewery. Take a tour, sample their wares, and inspect the beautiful Woodstock gardens.

Downstream lies the site of the female factory, where female convicts and their children were housed.

At its lower end, the rivulet runs under the city. Take the fascinating tour under the cbd and learn about the historical development of the City of Hobart.

Bellerive Battery

On the other side of the Derwent River, the historic gun battery at Kangaroo Bluff in Bellerive affords panoramic views of Hobart, the Tasman Bridge and Mount Wellington.

Catch the ferry to Bellerive from Constitution Dock, and take a picturesque 20min walk along the foreshore to the bluff.
