Welcome to the home page of the Australian Subcommittee of the International
Commission on Mathematical Instruction.
Mathematics 2000 Festival
The Mathematics 2000 Festival, an initiative of ASICMI to celebrate the
International Year of Mathematics, will be held at Melbourne University,
January 10-14, 2000. Addressed to teachers and professionals, students
and families, the Festival is a large-scale event designed to have wide
popular appeal. Each day will focus on mathematics in relation to an
area of public interest: sport, money, computers and engineering.
Distinguished speakers include Roger Penrose, Keith Devlin, and Adam
Spencer.
ICME-9
The 9th International Congress on Mathematical Education, 30 July-6 August 2000,
Chiba, Japan. Australians wishing to participate are advised to contact
directly the organisers of the sessions they are interested in.
The Australian Subcommittee of the International Commission on
Mathematical Instruction (ASICMI) is a Subcommittee of the Australian
Academy of Science's National Committee for Mathematics (NCM). ASICMI is
the link between ICMI and the organizations concerned with mathematics
education in Australia and exists for three major purposes:
- To liaise with ICMI itself, through the Executive Committee (ICMI-EC) and Secretary, to ensure that Australian input is received on
issues of importance to ICMI (for example criteria for the holding of
Regional ICMI conferences and selection of topics and presenters for the
International Congress on Mathematical Education (ICME) held every four
years).
- To liaise with the NCM to make it and the Academy aware of
important issues in mathematics education both nationally and
internationally.
- To liaise with other organizations in Australia with an interest in
mathematics education (e.g., AAMT, AMS, MELA, MERGA, SSA and AMSC) to bring to their attention issues raised by ICMI or perceived to be of importance
to these groups in Australia.
